September Charity Spotlight

Ronald McDonald House

This year the District made RMDH an official project of local Lions.  Lions have collectively recycled hundreds of pounds of pull tabs so families can spend nights at the RMDH for free while their child is seeking treatment.  Touch hearts, change lives.

The four major service clubs of Modesto have collaborated for months with the Salvation Army to develop a free health clinic.  The facility at 9th and D streets in Modesto was official open on May 11, 2011.   The clinist joins others that care for the homeless, such as the Modesto Gospel mission.

The clinic will start off slowly, providing eye exams to the 40 men and women who live in the shelter's transitional living program.  The clinic should have all of its services available to the homeless when the winter shelter opens on Nov. 1.

"Organizers believe it is the first time the Rotarians, Lions, Kiwanians, and Soroptimists have worked together on a Modesto-area project.  Work started in September, and service club members did the grunt work to build the clinic." - The Modesto Bee.

The volunteer-staffed clinic consists of four exam rooms.  Each service club is taking charge of a room:

  • The Rotarians are responsible for the dental room.
  • The Lions are running the eye clinic.
  • The Kiwanians are responsible for the medical clinic.
  • The Soroptimists are overseeing the womens clinic.
Thank you to everyone who supports this project!  We'll keep you updated as things progress!

Why I Became a Lion

WhyIBecameALion

In 1983, I moved back to California and decided to settle in Modesto. At the time, my dad belonged to the Sonora Lions.  I had gone with him to several meetings and enjoyed the people (men only then) and their attitudes.  They came from diverse backgrounds but shared one good thing, they all came together to serve their community.  One evening in 1983, I ran into Jim     Morrison, my old neighbor in Pinecrest and the only person in Modesto I knew.  I told him I wanted to look into joining a service club like Lions, to get to know people and help out in the community.  Jim said he would have his old buddy, Carl Haney, give me a call.  He was first vice president at the time.  So I joined in 1983 and the rest is history thanks to colorful Carl.  I enjoy the people I meet through Lions and try to return something to the community, which I also enjoy.  The best thing Lions have done since I’ve been involved was to get women involved.  - Jim Rende 1/23/97
